The Very Reverend Leonidas Contos was born in 1920 and received the call to Greek Orthodox priesthood in his late teens. He attended Holy Cross Seminary in Pomfret, CT, where he both excelled academically and met his wife, Athena, who lived in a neighboring town. In 1944, Rev. Contos was ordained in Stamford, CT, at the Church of the Archangels, which would also be his first assignment. Throughout the years, Rev. Contos served the Church in several capacities, including:

  • President and Alex G. Spanos Professor of Orthodox Studies at the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute in Berkeley, CA

Rev. Contos was devoted to the accurate translation of the Church’s liturgical texts and co-founded Narthex Press with Rev. Spencer Kezios. In recognition of this passion, he was named official translator of the Archdiocese. He wrote and edited several works, including:

  • Guidelines for the Orthodox in Ecumenical Relations (1966)
