2001 Speaker - Professor John Svarlien
Professor of Classics, Transylvania University
Dr. John Svarlien received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1976. In 1981, he earned his M.A. at Florida State University, and Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989.
Dr. Svarlien is currently a Professor of Classics at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he has received the Bingham Award for Excellence in Teaching and serves as advisor for the institution’s Classics club, Sodalitas.
Dr. Svarlien is particularly interested in the literature of ancient Rome and Greece, Greco-Roman mythology, travel in the ancient world, and issues of sexuality and gender in antiquity. He has published in the American Journal of Philology and, most recently, his verse translations of two of Horace’s Satires have appeared in Literary Imagination and Arion. His translations from Ovid’s Amores were included in the compilation Latin Lyric and Elegiac Poetry.
